Why does chicken pox occur?

chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is most commonly seen in children, but it can also affect adults who have not previously had the disease or been vaccinated against it.

Chickenpox is spread from person to person through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through direct contact with the fluid from chickenpox blisters. The virus can also be spread by touching an object that has been contaminated with the virus, such as a towel or bedding.

Most people who get chickenpox will recover completely within a few weeks, but the disease can be serious, especially for newborns, adults, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems. Complications of chickenpox can include pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and sepsis (a potentially life-threatening infection of the blood).

A vaccine is available to prevent chickenpox. The vaccine is usually given to children as part of the routine childhood vaccination schedule, and it is highly effective at preventing the disease.
